more snow is on the way. we are getting kicked while we're down from the last storm we had just a couple of days ago. fox 5 morning news starts at 6:00 right now. and good morning, everybody. there is a live look outside

this morning. trying to get some of those streets cleared from the last snowstorm and getting ready for the next one which is going to arrive a little bit later on today. we're glad you are joining us on this tuesday for fox 5 morning news i'm gurvir dhindsa. >> i'm steve chenevey. thank you for being with us. the federal government is closed once again today. second day in a row the government is closed. federal government, that is. emergency employees are expected to report to work on time. most schools are closed as well including d.c. schools. >> there is a little bit of good news if you take metro. every station on the red, orange, green and yellow lines is open with trains coming about every 30 minutes. the blue line is running between franconia springfield and stadium armory. there is limited metrobus and metro access service today. all that information, excuse

me, can you find on our web site. myfoxdc.com. tony s more on our forecast. >> the heavy snow works its way in here by tonight and by tomorrow morning, we'll be getting hit pretty hard the way things are shaping up once again. let's show you the radar images of what is happening currently. we just have clouds in over us now but you can see the leading edge of the precipitation out to our west. we see a little bit of activity popping up south of washington. right there, just popped up there. maybe a snow shower, snow flurry here are there during the morning hours but then the snow begins in earnest i think late morning, noon, 1:00, something like that. all right. a warning. there is a warning in effect. we'll show you that. it is a winter storm warning yet again. this one goes into effect at noon. it lasts until wednesday at 7:00 p.m. does that mean it will be snowing that entire time? actually, in all likelihood, yes, it does the way things are

shaping up right now. the lighter amounts today. the entire viewing area cluding queen anne's an talbot county. they are not filled in there just due to a computer glitch but all of the counties you see there pink. 26 in the district. there are spots in thteens and single digit. we are looking for snow to develop during the late morning, early afternoon. accumulations light during the daylight hours. high today 32 degrees. we'll go into more detail on the snow totals and the rest of the storm tomorrow coming up in just a little bit. >> we'll be listening. thank you. >> my pleasure. >> let's get a look at the roads with julie wright. >> it it is getting very busy out there. we have a number of problems to report. icy conditions, ice on the ramp causing to you lose one right lane off the inner loop of the beltway to go northbound i-95 and head up towards 212 in

beltsville. crew in sky fox checking out your commute in the bw parkway in the vicinity of 197. do we have them or not? if we do, let's pop that camera up for us so we can see what is going on there. we do have reports of an incident i believe to be on the northbound said of the baltimore-washington parkway in the vicinity of 197. it looks like they are doing snow removal here and a lot of areas around town single file to the right gets you by. can we pan this out and see about a delay. if you are on the northbound side in the direction of bwi coming from the beltway, this is what you will encounter. i'm told southbound everything is open. if you are making the trip on the outer loop, they were scheduled to make some snow removal between 95 and college park. for the rest of you guys making the trip on the southbound stretch of 270, that is where we had the accident activity tying up all but the right side of road causing big delays for

those traveling out ofgermantown this morning. they zoomed the camera in for us. snow removal crews working outer loop of the beltway at vicente -- at van dorn street. >> because of this last winter storm and the one coming today, virginia governor bob mcdonnell is extending the state of emergency that. gives local governments time to start arly preps. unfortunately, the clean-up is far from over. there are still plenty of roads that are still covered in snow and ice that have not yet seen plows or fronted front end loaders or heavy equipment. more snow is on wait. we are continuing to keep an eye on the roads as yet another round of winter weather approaches. >> let's check in with sarah simmons. she is joining us live from mclean, virginia to see how

things are looking there. >> reporter: good morning to you both. i think a lot of people were just starting to see their neighborhood streets and now we'll get dumped on again today and it is these inds of areas, these spots. this is a very slick one. i just came upon it and i just about fell. sometime they are difficult to see. you wouldn't think it would be the slickest spot but it definitely is right in here just turning at the intersections and did i have report areas. this is where we noticed people yesterday just spinning out, getting stuck in snow banks. if you were driving around, you saw it quite a bit. now, as holly mentioned earlier, look at all the piles of snow. you wonder where is this going to go with this additional snow. we'll figure that out as the day gets going on and the snow starts falling. we'll keep an eye on the roadways and we'll keep you updated and stay here with fox 5 and we'll give you the latest. back to you guys. >> thank you. if you are still trying to

toyota is now recalling 400,000 hybrids for brake problems. the recall mostly involves the prius but also includes a lexus hybrid. it is the latest string of embarrassing safety issues with the world's biggest carmaker. congressman john murtha of pennsylvania has died. murtha's office says the democrat died at virginia hospital center in arlington yesterday afternoon. he was admitted to the hospital after complication gallbladder surgery. he was the first combat veteran of the vietnam war to be elected to congress. he was 77. and now for what could be a true miracle in haiti. family members say one man spent nearly a month under the rubble and survived. they say the 28-year-old was found in the wreckage after market where he sold rice. some 27 days after the earthquake first hit. while doctors have not confirmed the family's story to be true, some say they do believe it. they say the man was emaciated and had several wounds and this

now optimistic about his condition. schools and the federal government once again closed today. >> the snow is expected to start falling again this afternoon. we'll talk with tony to find out exactly how much we might expect and how long it will last when we come back. ( music playing )

>> yes, it is. so tell us what this next round is coming. >> all right t begins i think in earnest this afternoon. the bulk, the heaviest part of the storm is late tonight and early tomorrow morning. that is what we're looking at. take a look. yeah, we are agoing to get hit again. you know, tucker and i are looking at this thing talking about, okay, well, what totals are we really talking about. i'm going show you and we'll talk about what the possibilities are. snow begins this afternoon. there will be some mixing south and east of here which will keep the totals down but that mixing is with sleeted and/or freezing rain. you could have icing conditions south and east. could that happen in d.c.? possibility we get a little bit of that here. it looks like it will be more snow. most of the accumulating snow will be wednesday morning. that is when the heaviest snow will be coming through here. the storm is really two parts.

current temperatures around the region, cold start to the day. let me tell you. in the district, 26. we'll take that. that is not bad. 26 in annapolis, compared to frederick, maryland where it is seven degrees. manassas, five degrees. culpeper, nine degrees. satellite-radar composite. we will show you the storm as it appears now. right now, we've got the clouds. that is the first thing to happen in our area. here is your snow. pretty good amount of snow. way out to the west, that is the low. as it moves across, we'll get another area of low pressure move off the coast, develop and move up the coast. as that moves up, those wind are going to increase. it will bring in a reinforcing blast of cold air and we'll get that snow. it will be heavy snow. however, as the storm is intensifying t will be pulling up the coast. this one all be farther north

than the last one we had just this weekend. we'll get some heavy snow but it will be for shorter periods. the heavier snowfall amounts will be north and east of the city. that is what we're thinking now. so the forecast for washington for today look like this. winter storm warn goes into effect at noon. snow develo around noontime or so. about an in. accumulation today. 32degrees for your high today. then for tonight, we are looking at that winter storm warning continuing. it continues until 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. snow will be heavy attimes particularly -- you can't say that word. particularly late tonight. additional assume layings five to ten inch. tomorrow, snow ends late in th day. right now, we think during the evening hours. total accumulations from this system, seven to 20 inches. that is a much wider range than we would normally give you because but it is because there are so many variables in this storm system. south and east, lower amounts

because of the mixed precipitation. frankly, south and west, depending on how fast the storm moves, you could see lower amounts. but from washington, significant amounts and then north and east of the city up in baltimore, carroll county, places like that, northeastern maryland, into pennsylvania and delaware, the higher amounts there. that is a look at what is happening with the weather. now, let's got an update on traffic. for that, we go to julie wright. >> we are talking snow removal, accidents and a lot of it. crews are working outer loop of the beltway near the bw parkway. cleaning up some snow removal along the right side. the crew in sky fox with us. they're checking out your ride. they tell me it is southbound on the baltimore-washington parkway at 197 where we have one lane squeezing by here to the right f you are continuing southbound trying to work your way around an incident here, you should find all of your lanes open. 95 is in good shape. southbound bw parkway as you make your way south of 197,

single file to the right will squeeze you by the scene of this accident. delays are building for those traveling southbound out of laurel headed down towards the catal beltway. we'll take it inside. we have another problem to report. this time around, it will be al approach 28. this is where we have a crash and it is smashed up badly. traffic is temporarily stopped while they move some equipment in at the scene trying to relief treef that vehicle. this is the intersection over a28. the inner loop of the beltway headed for the wilson bridge, we have snow removal crews tying up two right lanes. certain areas, you temporarily lose the left lane of two because of snow-covered routes. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. our team coverage of the next winter blast continues when we return. >> holly is live in germantown for us where they are still digging out, holly. >> report: still digging out from round one, steve and now

we have to tell you that we do have this other major winter blast set to hit us this afternoon. >> a lot of folk still digging out from the weekend though. >> holly is up in germantown where it seems like it is a neer-ending task. >> it is a never ending task. i think people are still in shock thinking that he with might get yet another big snowstorm. but as you get out and about today, i want to show you looks can be deceiving. look down here. i think if you just looked at this at first, you would think that looks like that slushy type snow. look when i step on this.

it is solid. that is solid ice right there. and if you were to hit that unknowingly driving at speed in your car, you would find yourself in a mess. or if you were just walk ago long your street and slipped on that, you could fall an get hurt. a lot of people have tackled their neighborhoods. the road crews have come and mr.ed through. people are dug out their driveways and sidewalks and now we have the huge pile of snow and the next question is where is the next round snow going to go? we have the heaviness of the snow. they are already talking about the wet snow. so that make it tough for more tree branches an power lines and thing like that, montgomery county knowing all too well about power outages. so something you might want to pull out today, pull out extra blankets. find your sleeping bag. that is a good way to stay warm if your heat goes out in your house. you want to have plenty of batteries, flashlights, candles, water, food that

doesn't need to be cooked that will help get you through. might want to pull out those old-fashioned board games to help pass the time and you want a battery-operated radio as well because the one thing you want to make sure you have as the storm is actually coming through our area is information and if you can't get it via the television because your power is out, you want to make sure you can be connected somehow and a battery operated radio is a great way to go. that is the latest from germantown here. i will tell you guys, coming up in the next hour, we do have a house expert coming out. he will talk about things we can do to help prepare our house now that we'll get hit for the fourth storm now of the year never too late. >> maybe next year. you got to get ready for that too, holly. thanks. >> the icy, sandy, salty mix is making for a bumpy ride if a lot of places. >> we'll check to see if conditions have improved at all and also found out how crews are getting ready for the next round. also, metro getting back up to

we are continuing to show you how things look outside this morning at # 30. this is columbia park road at route 50. you see a number of big rigs out there. not quite sure if they are stuck or maybe just take ago break until they get back out on the road a little bit later on this morning. hopefully, as the sun comes up. so anyway, we'll continue to show you live pictures throughout the day to let you know how things look out there. >> a lot of places are still closed today as we continue to clean up from the last storm and get ready for the next one. the federal government is closed once again. the federal government is closed. all major school systemsre close the once again today as well.

>> if you take metro, every station on the red, the orange, the green and the yellow line is open with trains coming about every 30 minutes. the blue line is running between franconia, springfield and stadium armory. mero may close early today because of the weather. there is limited metrobus an metro access service today and can you go to myfoxdc.com for more details. let's check in with tony for a look at what we can expect throughout the day today. look like we have more wintry weather on the way today. later on today, some more snow makes its way in here. because of that, the national weather service has issued a winter storm warning that goes into effect today at noon. it includes the entire viewing area and including washington, d.c. and baltimore. that winter storm warning goes into effect at noon, lasts until 7:00 tomorrow evening. all right. here a look at the satellite- radar composite. it will show you the big

picture. you can seat clouds that have pushed in. can you seat clouds are thicker out to the west and there is quite a bit of snow out to the west. there is also some rain down across the south and a little line of sleet and/or freezing rain. all of that -- not the rain but the freezing rain, sleet, snow kes its way into the mid- atlantic a little bit later on today. there is the possibility that south and east of the district, your snow will mix with that frozen sleet, freezing rain, wintry precipitation which will keep snow totals down but will bring some iciness into the equation. current temperatures at the area airports, reagan national is at 26 degrees at this hour. 13 at dulles. 18 at bwi marshall. the winner fine now. but later on today, tonight really when is they start to pick up. late tonight into early tomorrow, the wind will be significant. right now, they're blowing at seven miles per hour here in

the district. all right, the forecast for washington for today looks like this. daytime accumulations about an inch. not too bad. can you get some stuff done today if you need to. high about 32 degrees at the freezing mark and heavier snow particularly late tonight into early tomorrow morning. there you go. >> i know you all are staying on top of it. >> we are trying our best. >> we'll be staying tuned to you all day. >> you bet. >> julie staying on top of the traffic for us once again this morning. >> we're diagnose our best. it is hard to see in the dark but sky fox is telling us they are above an incident at columbia pike at route 50. it will be a little difficult to tell if this is north or south of 50 but what you need to know is that we do have two tractor-trailers involved in this incident here on columbia pike. we are told that one of them may very well be jackknifed but it is kind of hard to tell from this particular angle but definitely an incident here that will cause a very interesting commute for those traveling along columbia pike here near 50. this guy here is kind of zig damaging around and let's see

how he will squeeze by to the right. it will be tight for him. but a lot of activity involving these tractor-trailers along columbia pike at 50. we'll take it back inside d we'll update your ride. a number of places around the beltway, we're talking about snow removal because we've got it. outer loop of the beltway near the bw parkway between connecticut avenue and 355. inare loop at van dorn street. the lists continue to grow as they continue to clean up the snow. here we are live at democracy boulevard with lanes open continuing southbound on to the exit for the outer loop. again, the slowdowns because of the snow removal on the inner loop of the beltway in the direction of the springfield interchange, you will find it clearing from the right side of the road. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. we're physicalling a developing story in prince george's county this morning where firefighters are putting out a fire at a husband on say at this turn in boie. it started about three hours ago. four people were home at the time including two children but they all made it out okay. it is something you will see all over the place right

now. you spend all that time shoveling out your car only to get it stuck on the roads. it doesn't look like we'll catch a break any time soon. road conditions are still pretty rough out there and certainly, they will get worse when the snow hits later today. sarah simmons is joining us live from mclean, virginia with a look at how roads are in that area. >> good morning to you both. it will be a rude awakening because once that additional snow falls, you won't be able to realize and maybe see that reflective area on the roadway where you kind of can tell there is some ice there. what we're standing in right now is just a sheet of ice. we are in a parking lot here in mclean and that is the proble this is what is going to be underneath all of that snow as we continue to get it. we're outcited of an elementary school here which i'm told that there is a sidewalk somewhere underneath here. i was talking to the building supervisor. he was getting ready to clean up this area. listen to what he had to say this morning.

>> i am the building supervisor and i'm the one in charge. the building getting ready so everybody can get into the building including the staff and the kids. >> how that is going so far? >> well, i haven't started yet. >> you're a little bit behind don't you think? >> right, right. i think i am going to do at least a half of what i'm supposed to do today. >> reporter: as can you see, he still hasn't gotten very far. he was here a little bit earlier but i think he was having trouble getting his snow blower going. hopefully people's snow blowers are ready to get. they've got the shovels ready to go for the second round as we get an additional how many inches is it again that wear up to right now? >> what is tony of the mate something. >> we lost track. >> i think essaying this round the there are some areas that could see 0-plus but that is up towards baltimore. >> so it will take a while to dig out from this.

as we get ready for this next round of winter weather, shoppers are packing grocery stores trying to stock up on food and necessities. even more concerning, empty shelves. some stores say they ordered extra shipments before the last weekend's storm but the problem is getting additional supply trucks through the snow. if the grocery stores are running low, now what happens after this next big storm. just how long will it take if our stores to be replenished. not quite sure about all of that. i think they're doing best they can. but really kind of depends on where some of those necessities are coming from. so let's take a listen. >> it is difficult to get the trucks into the store but we are doing the best we can. >> there is nothing anywhere in there. juice, everything, cheese, even the crescent rolls, the little -- everything is gone. >> a lot of the stores, the

meat departments are really running low but we are told it is not the food supply. it is because the meats need to be prepared by personal so a lot of folks aren't able to et to work because of all the snow. it is having a ripple effect for you. there is a live look outside right now. there is 395 at king street. finally, 395 is down to some pavement but that is no everywhere. just in some of the areas there. traffic backed up. starting to look more and more like a normal rush hour. look like a little bit of sun starting to peek through this mornin pefully, we'll see a little bit more sunshine like we saw yesterday. at least, the sun made it feel better. >> it did. and you know, i got home finally and folks are out and they're shoveling and everyone is talking and throwing stuff at me. >> isn't it fun, the difference between the people that have the cabin fever because they haven't been out of the house and those of us who wanted a day off to go enjoy the snow. >> that is right. wait a minute. hold on.

there seems to be a problem here. my mike is on so the battery must be dead. >> do you immediate my mike? >> let me let you have my mike. you can do the ather and then we will deal with the rest of it. >> you are a sweetheart. >> don't ever let anybody say -- >> no matter what tucker said. >> you just dropped the mike part it. hold on a second. >> in the spirit of cooperation. >> thank you very much. this is what we think is going to happen. what is happening to my ear now with this storm in term of when the precipitation begins. here what is we being. today, between 1:00 and 3:00, the snow begins. it doesn't mean at noon you might not see a few flurries but we do think it begins roughly between 1:00 and 3:00. by 7:00 p.m. this evening, about an inch or so on the ground maybe up to the north, two inches. by 11:00 tonight, two to three inches. so it takes a while to get

churning. by wednesday morning, four to six inchess and then by noon tomorrow, eight to 10 inches. that is why we think the heaviest snowfall will be tomorrow morning. that is the way things are looking at this hour. here you go. current temperatures around the region. 26degrees in washington. 26 in annapolis. dulles at 13 degrees. culpeper has come up to 10 degrees. that is an increase for culpeper. very nice. quantico, 17. frederi, seven. out to the east, salisbury is at 13 degrees. we are keeping our eyes on the snow. it is getting ever closer. again, probably not all of that hitting the ground but maybe a little snow shower popping up to the south and east of washington. most the snow in southwestern virginia, southern portions of west virginia and back into the ohio valley. as far as totals go, this one is a tough one to call because there are many variables including the possibility of some sleet an freezing rain mixing in, particularly south and east. that is why we've got the lower

totals there. five to 10 inches generally south and east of the district. in our region, 10 to 15 inches but it depends on v we think the storm intensifies a little farther north than it did before so the heavier amounts really baltimore to points north and east. 15-plus inches. for us, 10 to 15 but if it intensifies just a little further to the north, in d.c., maybe seven, eight, nine inches. we could be lucky. some years, we would say boy, an eight-inch storm. but if we get that, we'll core that happy. we are putting if it in the 10 to 15-inch range right now. winter storm warping goes into effect at noon. snow develops as we said this afternoon. light amounts during the course of the day today. 32degrees for your high oday. then for tonight, we are looking at snow untense identifying particularly late at night. it could be heavy at times. additional accumulations from the evening into the early- morning hours depending on

where you are five to 10 inches. 25degrees for your overnight low. then your five-day forecast, we are looking for a lot of snow tomorrow, again, particularly to the north and east. and then we dry out thursday, friday and saturday and i tell you what, friday and saturday, even though our highs are only in the 30s, we should get some melting going on. so yeah, we'll need it too. that will be good. that is a look at what is happen with the weather. it is time for ask the weather guy. >> it's segment where tucker barnes and i put our big heads together and to answer your most pressing questions weather- related or otherwise. today's question is from pete ogby in adelphi who wants to know, has there ever been winter season where the d.c. metropolitan area did not receive any snow? that is a good question. we had to look that one up because i didn't -- i had my suspicions but i had to look

off the inner loop at van dorn. outer loop near new hampshire avenue as well as making the trip over near 355. again, we had the accident southbound bw parkway at 197. checking for a stalled car in this area along 270 and old georgetown road. çói want to point out. this is a great shot to show you. these on and off-ramps, still a little snow covered. major arteries, not too bad. you will find that you do lose the right lane underneath old georgetown road underneath the overpass here because of snow that has accumulated along the right side. that is about it. it is pretty clear out of gaithersburg at this point. columbia park road over at 50 for an incident there. keep your eyes peeled for that. inbound new york avenue at fifth street for an incident. traffic is forced to turn left to fifth street and that is in northwest. this is a live shot of wisconsin avenue at western. again, we are told it is a stalled car or a stalled vehicle because this tractor- trailer, we've been watching it

for i while has not moved and we can see back here in the distance, we can see one little flare poking out out there. all traffic coming on wisconsin avenue is being detoured around this particular site. it appears it is the tractor- trailer not moving. we have seen some traffic come into ooing traffic there. we've seen them making turns there illegal will you and people out there trying to work the traffic around this blockage. so sconsin avenue at western, traffic right now not moving on the inbound side. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. a lot of folks wondering whether they have to go to work today. one group that is going and that is the d.c. national guard. they have to report today. >> asked to report to the armory at 10:00 today. bring your cold weather gear and be prepared to stay two to three nights for the full-time member of the national guard. >> they will be helping with snow relief. other crews that are going to be getting ready are the pepco crews because this is still a

lot of people that don't have any power right now and i know they're working as hard as they can to get the power turned on. >> clay and are son is with us from pepco. >> good morning. >> bring us up to speed ads to -- as it where we are now. >> we have made a greet dale of progress. montgomery county, 10,900 customers still out. prince george's county, down to 143. district of columbia, 219. 41,000 yesterday this time. we're down to about 11,800. so we're working hard to -- we know that time is against us as far as the next storm is concerned. >> clay, what is the issue in montgomery county. is it just getting to those folks and getting to the lines that may be down? >> well, it is. the wet snow did bring down quite a bit of power lines. at the height of the storm, we had over 1,000 lines that were down. i have visited areas of montgomery county and the roads

are difficult but montgomery county has been doing a wonderful job getting our crews and our trucks in. it is access but we are going to keep pushing even when the snow starts. we will still be out there until safety calls us in. >> it looked like you will catch a bit of a break today since the snowfall might not happen until later this afternoon and certainly the heavy stuff not until after midnight. maybe that will give you a chance to get a little more work done efore the next round comes in. >> our gel is for restoration if all of our customers today. we know we have our work cut out for us. but we are working around the clock, wall-to-wall. our mutual assistance folk will remain in place to work in tandem with the pepco crews. we will try to get everyone on if possible today. >> and obviously, concerned about more outages as this next round comes in this afternoon. >> yes, we will be working again 12, 18-hour shifts if necessary as the storm moves through today, tonight into tomorrow. but we're going to stay because

>> in arlington, snow plows are lowly getting to the back roads. but with more snow on the way, it can't come soon enough. >> reporter: tiscotch has lived on 25th street in south arlington for his entire life. >> it would be nice if there would be some more salt tcks but that is probably not going to happen. >> reporter: that list actually a map is located here, arlington county's snow war room in shirlington. >> this is a typical map for the regular type of thing we do. >> reporter: manager dave hundert says the map divides arlington in eight different districts. main roads in red and blew get hit first, everything else comes next. >> has it been plowed at all? >> reporter: articling ton resident have been calling in reports on roads that have not been plowed but street officials say their efforts have been slowed by the ice that is now forming in the snow. >> we can't take the big bites of it that we need to. we are doing little bits at a time, kind like cutting grass.
